India is facing an unprecedented wave of attacks on Christians and their institutions and property. Numerous churches and Christian institutions have been destroyed in Orissa and other states as well, including Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala, Chhattisgarh, and Uttar Pradesh.

Christian Legal Association was recorded over 150 cases of persecutions across India in 2008 alone. This figure does not include the communal attacks against the Christians in Orissa in the month of August which resulted in over 58 deaths and approximately 50,000 people being displaced by the violence.  Read CLA's report on the Orissa violence.
