2008 has been our busiest year yet for advocating for the rights of the oppressed and vulnerable communities in India.

Through the last year, CLA organized meeting with parliamentarians, held conferences and workshops, conducted training for Christian workers, supported a legal team in Kandhamal, Orissa and provided legal assistance to Christian organizations and workers across India.

CLA members were also involved in providing support to the Christian Fellowship of Nepal in drafting of their recommendations on the interim Constitution. Many other CLA members also participated in various international conferences and seminars. A detailed CLA report for the year is available online at the CLA website.  

Plans for 2009
However, we foresee that 2009 will be even busier. CLA plans to conduct atleast 100 legal trainings for Christian workers and four conferences for lawyers in different parts of the country.

We will also continue to provide support to the victims of communal violence in Orissa and other parts of the country. CLA also plans to retain regional coordinators for Chattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu to extend CLA’s work in the regions. CLA will make special efforts to interact with law students by providing five internships and support the legal studies of five students in Orissa.

CLA will also continue to monitor incidents of communal violence and make necessary interventions to protect and promote the freedom of conscience and religion.

However, none of this will be possible without the support of CLA members. CLA needs you to volunteer your time and resources to fulfill the great task set before us.

Membership Renewals
All members are requested to renew their membership for the financial year 2009-2010. Prospective members are invited to send the enclosed membership form duly signed. The membership fee for each category is as follows:

Supporting CLA
CLA needs approximately INR 5,00,000 per month to undertake all the activities mentioned above and to provide support one project director, legal director, ten lawyers, one programme officer, six activists, twenty volunteers, four regional coordinators and one accountant and associated office costs.

If just 2500 people commit to giving Rs. 200 per month, all the 2009 finanical needs of CLA would be met.
